Essex County is one of New Jersey's most populous regions, with many resources and activities for older adults. Transportation, activities, and medical resources abound for seniors, especially those with access to a home caregiver.

Essex County has a number of public, shared and private transportation options. NJ Transit has two of its major transit hubs in Newark Penn and Newark Broad Street for connections to Newark International and the Newark Light Rail to move around New Jersey's largest city. For the mobility-impaired, however, paratransit is a better option. Access Link requires an in-person interview. Once registered, reservations can be made up to a week, but no less than a day, in advance. For private, short-distance service, Uber or a local car service are the best options.

A number of senior centers exist in Essex County with a variety of available activities. In West Orange, bingo, aerobics, yoga, and zumba classes are offered on a weekly basis. Other events include knitting classes, picnics and movie nights. Depending on location, senior centers offer classes according to availability.

Medical Resources

Some of the best hospitals in the state are located in Essex County. The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation is the fifth-best hospital in New Jersey. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is a regionally ranked hospital as well, ranked number ten in last year's U.S. World News Report.
