Hudson County is just across the river from the largest city in the country, and the ninth largest in the world. But that doesn't mean seniors have to go to New York to stay engaged with the community and participate in stimulating activities. For those seniors who have a home caregiver, the below activities are great ways to live comfortably and actively.

Transport

Hudson County offers a variety of public, shared and private transportation options. Light rail service is available from Hoboken to Bergen, and all of NJ Transit's buses kneel and are wheelchair accessible. Access Link is a paratransit system in Jersey City, Hoboken and Bergen. It's available for rides that begin within three-quarters of a mile of the NJ Transit local bus route. Cost is comparable to bus fare and eligibility is based on an in-person interview. For seniors who require transportation to the assessment agency for an interview, Access Link can be provided. The mobile tax app, Uber, is also available throughout Hudson County, and simplifies transportation for seniors and caregivers.

Activities

A variety of activities are available for seniors in Hudson County, from classic films to Shakespeare, to kid-friendly museums that are ideal for visits with grandkids. Jersey City is home to the Loew's Jersey Theater, which features classic films and live performances during its lengthy renovations. The Office of Senior Affairs offers movie screenings on the first Tuesday of each month at the Newport Theater. For high culture, seniors can buy affordable tickets to Shakespeare performed by the Hudson Shakespeare Company. Their repertoire changes every year. The Jersey City Library hosts events, movies, and crafts available for people of all ages. Or for those older adults who prefer fresh air, Liberty State Park has partial wheelchair access and great views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. For seniors with grandchildren, the Liberty Science Center is very popular. Recent exhibits include sets of images from the Hubble Telescope, as well as inquiries into the future of space exploration and nano-technology. For daring older adults, the Pole Position Raceway, where electric cars zip around a track, is a hit with grandkids of all ages.

Resources

Hudson County has numerous government offices to answer questions about benefits and eligibility. The local Office on Aging offers information on transportation, home care, community concerns, and nutrition. New Jersey Medicaid is based on residency and age, and is part of NJ Family Care, which provides affordable health coverage. Conveniently, the Medicaid District Office happens to be in Jersey City. For medical emergencies, Jersey City Medical Center has recently expanded its cancer and heart services, becoming a regional leader in the process. Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center is another hospital that has improved over recent years, with shuttle bus services to six local towns and a new outpatient center.
