Philadelphia is the fifth-largest city in the country and has some of the best transportation, activities and medical resources available. A home care aide can really provide the extra help many older adults need in getting out of their home and living active, engaging lives.

Philadelphia has a range of public, shared, and private transportation options. The Philadelphia public transit system, SEPTA, has a wide range throughout the Metro Philly area, with both subway lines and regional rails that stretch over state lines and connect with regional transit systems. For mobility-impaired individuals, however, paratransit is a better option. CCT Connect offers service within ¾ of a mile of local bus routes. Reservations can be made between 1 and 3 days in advance and fares are $4.00 each way. For shorter-distance, more immediate service, Uber is a mobile app that lets users hail a private car within minutes. For this kind of transportation, Uber or local car services are the best way to travel.

Philadelphia has a wide variety of activities for seniors, from great art museums and cultural events to interactive senior centers and exercise classes. Both the Rodin Museum and the Barnes Foundation have world-renowned French art collections. The latter has more Impressionist paintings than anywhere outside of Paris, and both are wheelchair accessible. For music-lovers, the Philadelphia Orchestra plays a wide repertory of classical pieces, from Tchaikovsky to Gershwin. In terms of a more communal experience, Philadelphia's many senior centers have a plethora of activities. Seniors can find bridge games and knitting classes, planned trips to local cultural centers, and discussions about short stories and novels. And for exercise, local YMCAs have Silver Sneakers programs, which have classes, education and social programs for older adults. It's increasingly important to stay active as we age, and whether that means going to cultural events or taking a daily walk, seniors can benefit from a host of options in the greater Philadelphia area.

Medical Resources

As the largest city in the state, Pennsylvania has a number of superb hospitals and public offices dedicated to aging. The second-best hospital in the state is the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is also highly rated, the fourth-best hospital in Pennsylvania. Hahnemann University Hospital is a regional standout, and is nationally ranked in nephrology. In addition the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging has their office on N Broad St, and their online link has plenty of health and wellness information for seniors. Regional Medicare and Medicaid administrators are also located in downtown Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is a world-class city, with superb transportation, activities, and medical resources. For those seniors looking to take advantage of home care as they age in place, plenty of opportunities exist throughout the Philadelphia area to stay empowered and engaged.
